The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, condemned and strongly rejected the military actions carried out by the armed forces of the United States against Nicolás Maduro on the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
In a message shared on social media, it stated that they represent a “clear violation” of Article 2 of the Charter of the United Nations (UN).
In her statement, Sheinbaum explicitly cited Article 2, paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, which states that member states must refrain from resorting to the "threat or use of force" against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
Based on the principles of foreign policy of Mexico and its "pacifist vocation," the Mexican government made an urgent call to respect international law and to cease any act of aggression against the government and the people of Venezuela.
The statement also warns that Latin America and the Caribbean is a "zone of peace" built on mutual respect and the peaceful resolution of disputes, and asserts that "any military action" puts regional stability at "serious risk."
In that context, Mexico reiterated that dialogue and negotiation are the only "legitimate and effective" ways to resolve differences and expressed its willingness to support efforts to facilitate dialogue, mediation, or accompaniment that contribute to preserving regional peace and avoiding confrontation.
Mexico also urged the UN to "act immediately" to help de-escalate tensions, facilitate dialogue, and create conditions for a "peaceful, sustainable solution in accordance with international law."
On the consular front, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that through the Mexican Embassy in Venezuela, it will maintain "constant communication" with the Mexicans residing in that country to assist them "in any necessary way." It advised those individuals to stay alert for information in the coming hours and to utilize the emergency channels provided (such as the embassy's phone and email, among others).
