The president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, spoke about the situation in Venezuela and stated that his government is closely monitoring the developments, amidst rising tensions following recent attacks and the worsening of the political crisis in that country.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, Abinader recalled that the Dominican State never recognized the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro as president, following the elections held in July 2024, the results of which have been widely questioned by the international community.
"Our country never recognized the legitimacy of Nicolás Maduro's proclamation as president following the elections of July 2024," wrote the leader.
Abinader emphasized that, consistent with this position, the Dominican Republic promoted the Santo Domingo Declaration in August 2024, a regional statement that demanded respect for the will expressed at the polls by the Venezuelan people.
The Dominican president also highlighted the historic solidarity between the Dominican and Venezuelan peoples and reiterated his government's willingness to collaborate on the restoration of democracy, peace, and national unity in Venezuela.
"Today we reiterate our willingness to collaborate in restoring democracy, peace, and national harmony in Venezuela," he stated.
Abinader concluded his message with an emphatic statement regarding Dominican foreign policy:
“The Dominican Republic will always stand by democracy. Wherever it is, whenever it is, and before whomever it may be.”
The president's statements come in a regional context marked by international concern over the democratic deterioration in Venezuela, the refusal to recognize the 2024 electoral results, and the increasing diplomatic pressure on the regime of the now-imprisoned Maduro.
