The Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó stated that the President of the United States Donald Trump “is a man of his word,” affirming that he has fulfilled commitments made to him during a meeting in the Oval Office in 2020.
The statements were published by Guaidó on the social media platform X, accompanied by an interview given to Univisión. “President Trump is a man of his word; what he told me in the Oval Office in 2020, he carried out with firmness and determination, after a pandemic and the lack of collaboration at that time from his Secretary of Defense,” wrote the opposition leader.
In a second post, he emphasized that a potential democratic transition in Venezuela requires several steps, among them the total release of political prisoners, which he described as a fundamental priority.
Guaidó proclaimed himself interim president of Venezuela on January 23, 2019, after rejecting the 2018 presidential elections, in which Maduro claimed victory amidst allegations of fraud. At that time, he gained recognition from more than fifty countries, including the United States.
However, in December 2022, the Venezuelan National Assembly elected in 2015 approved the dissolution of the interim government, which meant that Guaidó ceased to be the main institutional figure of the opposition.
The decision was supported by 72 deputies, with 29 votes against and eight abstentions, marking the formal end of his role as acting president as of January 5, 2023.
Guaidó's recent statements reignite the debate about the role of the United States in the Venezuelan crisis and the support from certain opposition sectors for the maximum pressure policy promoted by Trump against Chavismo.
