The White House revived an old post from President Joe Biden on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) this Saturday, in which the then Democratic candidate accused Donald Trump of “admiring bullies and dictators like Nicolás Maduro.”

The original message, published in June 2020, was republished with an image of the capture of Maduro during the U.S. military operation in Caracas, carried out on January 3rd.

The post was interpreted as an ironic response from Trump to the criticism that Biden made nearly six years ago.

In the 2020 text, Biden had written: “Trump talks tough about Venezuela, but admires bullies and dictators like Nicolás Maduro. As president, I will support the Venezuelan people and defend democracy.”

The White House has now shared the same message along with a photo of the moment when U.S. forces captured the Chavista leader.

The gesture was described as a politically charged response rich in symbolism and a demonstration of how the Trump administration remains obsessed with contrasting its actions with those of Biden.

The original tweet from the Democrat referred to an interview published by Axios on June 21, 2020, in which then-President Trump stated that he did not rule out meeting with Maduro and expressed doubts about his decision to recognize Juan Guaidó as the legitimate leader of Venezuela.

That statement was used by the Democrats to accuse him of lacking firmness in the face of authoritarian regimes.

However, six years later, the operation that culminated in the capture of Maduro on charges of narcoterrorism and criminal conspiracy has changed the tone of the political debate in Washington.
