Starting Monday, February 2, more Cubans of Spanish descent will be able to submit their nationality applications at the Consulate General of Spain in Havana.
The measure will allow for a 10.62% increase in the number of appointments available each week to process citizenship under Law 20/2022, known as the Law of Democratic Memory.

The increase will take effect at the beginning of February and aims to expedite processing due to the high demand for nationality applications, especially among descendants of Spaniards born in Cuba.
According to official information shared by the Consulate's WhatsApp channel and its X profile, the adjustment will allow approximately 167 additional people per week to submit their applications.
With this expansion, it is expected to reduce waiting times and facilitate access to the process, which has generated considerable interest in the Cuban community since its implementation.
The Law of Democratic Memory, approved in 2022, offers the possibility of obtaining Spanish nationality to children and grandchildren of exiles who lost their citizenship due to political reasons or repression during the Franco regime and the Civil War.
The consulate in Havana has reiterated that appointments must be requested only through official channels and that there are no authorized intermediaries to manage appointments or procedures on their behalf.
On October 22, 2025, the deadline to apply for the Law of Democratic Memory, commonly known as the Law of Grandchildren, expired, allowing hundreds of thousands of descendants of Spaniards to request nationality.
The statement from the Consulate of Spain in Havana at that time specified that only those who obtained a certificate with an electronic signature — Secure Verification Code (CSV) — would be guaranteed the right to an in-person appointment.
In contrast, those who received credential rejections or did not have the CSV had to re-register before the deadline last October.
