The President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, warned on Monday that "the time has come" to distance the Russian threat from Greenland, after accusing Denmark of supposedly ignoring for years the NATO warnings about the growing military risk in the Arctic.

"NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years that it needs to distance the Russian threat from Greenland. Unfortunately, Denmark has not been able to do anything about it. The time has come, and it will be done!", wrote the leader on his Truth Social network, and the official account of the White House echoed the message.

Trump's statements come amid a wave of protests in Greenland and Denmark against Washington's plans to expand its control over the autonomous territory, which is considered strategic due to its geopolitical position and natural resources.

This weekend, thousands of people took to the streets of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, and in several Danish cities to reject the threats from the U.S. president.

The protesters chanted slogans defending the Arctic territory's right to determine its future without foreign interference. They carried banners with messages such as "Greenland is not for sale" and "Our land, our future."

The Prime Minister of Greenland, Múte B. Egede, led the march in the capital and, microphone in hand, reiterated to the crowd that the territory “is not for sale.”

Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen are escalating amidst a growing Russian military presence in the Arctic, a key region for the global strategic balance. Trump has insisted that the United States "will not allow Moscow to continue expanding its influence" in the area.
