A nine-month-old Cuban boy has been in intensive care for three months at the Eduardo Agramonte Pina pediatric hospital in Camagüey, intubated for the eighth time and unable to receive the urgent surgery he needs to survive.

His case once again highlights the collapse of the Cuban healthcare system and the complete helplessness faced by patients and their families.

The little one is named Darwin Daniel Sotolongo Cedres and suffers from grade 4 tracheal stenosis, an extremely serious condition that prevents him from breathing normally.

As explained by Yusneidi Casas, the mother’s cousin of the child, on , Darwin needs an urgent operation that cannot be performed in Cuba due to a lack of resources and specialists.

"A brave boy fights every day against grade 4 tracheal stenosis, a very delicate condition that affects his breathing," wrote Yusneidi.

"He is currently intubated and needs urgent surgery to continue living, a surgery that cannot be performed in this country due to a lack of doctors and resources. (...) No family should have to face this alone," he added.

In a statement to CiberCuba, Yusneidi specified that the baby is from Florida, Camagüey, and has been hospitalized for three months.

"He is intubated for the eighth time, and at the hospital, they told him that nothing could be done because here in Cuba, there are neither the resources nor the doctors needed for that type of surgery," he specified.

Darwin's case is not an isolated one.

In the comments of the post, another mother, Yenifer Yamirka Guerra, shared a similar situation: "My little one is also waiting for her second surgery; she has pulmonary atresia and for the same reasons, she has not been able to undergo surgery."

In a Facebook group from Campechuela, user Ana Vega shared contact information for those who wish to help: "The baby's grandfather is named Carlo Cedre Hernández, from Florida, Camagüey. His number is 56514865. The child's father is with the mother at the pediatric hospital; his number is 56155603," she said.

While the government insists on triumphant speeches about public health, the reality in hospitals tells a different story: children unable to receive surgery, desperate parents, and doctors constrained by a lack of resources.

The story of Darwin Daniel is a reflection of a health crisis that can no longer be hidden in Cuba: facilities in ruins and lacking supplies, empty pharmacies, and doctors without basic tools to save lives, leaving the most vulnerable patients completely defenseless.

Families are forced to plead for help on social media while the State, responsible for ensuring public health, does not provide real solutions.

In Darwin's case, the lack of medications, medical technology, and specialized personnel turns a treatable illness into an extended sentence of suffering.

The child breathes thanks to tubes and machines, while his parents live in anguish and helplessness, knowing that the operation that could save his life is not performed in the country.
