A deep impact has been felt in Havana following the discovery of the lifeless body of a newborn baby in a corner of the Santo Suárez neighborhood, in the 10 de Octubre municipality.
The communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported this Tuesday on Facebook that the discovery was made at the corner of Rabí and Correa, in the Santo Suárez neighborhood, south of the Cuban capital.
Residents of the area found the body of the minor near some garbage bins and immediately alerted the authorities.
The Cuban activist Adelth Bonne Gamboa, who resides in the same neighborhood, also confirmed the incident and expressed his outrage on Facebook.
"This afternoon, the lifeless body of a child was found in a dumpster. The incident occurred in the Santo Suárez neighborhood, my neighborhood, specifically at the corner of Rabí and Correa, one block from the Polyclinic of Coco and Rabí. This is no longer a city; this is a jungle. It's all horrific."
In the comments on the posts, a neighbor identified as Virginia Rodríguez claimed that the body belonged to a newborn baby, still with the umbilical cord, and that it was found by some children playing in the area.
The magnitude of the event has caused a strong shock among the residents of the municipality and has generated numerous reactions of grief and outrage on social media.
Neighbors and activists agreed on highlighting the severity of the institutional neglect faced by children in Cuba, where the social, economic, and moral crisis is reflected in shocking events like this one.
"The pain is immense. No one understands how such a defenseless creature can end up this way," wrote Mayeta.
In a subsequent update, communicator Mayeta reported that, as night fell, investigation teams arrived in the area where the baby was found in the Santo Suárez neighborhood, 10 de Octubre municipality, to continue the inquiries and gather information.
So far, the identity of the mother is unknown, but authorities may begin a review process in the coming days among women who were pregnant in that area of Havana, in order to advance the identification and clarify what happened.
The community remains distraught and is awaiting clear answers regarding this incident that has shocked the neighborhood, emphasized the communicator.
The discovery of the lifeless body of a newborn in the Havana neighborhood of Santo Suárez is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a troubling sequence of similar events that reflect the deep social deterioration in Cuba.
In June, a baby was found dead inside a dumpster at the intersection of Infanta and Santa Rosa, in the Cerro municipality, wrapped in a plastic bag, according to citizen reports shared on social media.
The images from that case sparked a wave of outrage and raised awareness about child abandonment amid the scarcity of resources and options for women in vulnerable situations.
Months earlier, another newborn was found dead inside a garbage tank in Pinar del Río, wrapped in a nylon bag.
