The closure of six public schools in Broward County has caused concern and sadness among parents, who fear the emotional and academic impact that transferring their children to other educational institutions will have.
Among the affected schools is Palm Cove Elementary in Pembroke Pines, which will cease operations at the end of the current school semester, reported the channel Telemundo 51.
The measure was approved by the School Board as part of a plan to address the decline in enrollment -often caused by the reduced arrival of immigrants- and to cut costs.
"It is very sad, this school is like a family," expressed Yalissa Matos, a mother of a student. Other parents noted that the changes could affect the emotional stability of the children and create a burden on the receiving schools.
The district superintendent, Howard Hepburn, indicated that Broward has lost over 40,000 students in the last decade, which has significantly reduced revenue.
According to the district, the closure will save approximately 8 million dollars annually.
The authorities reported that the transition process has begun and that families can check the district's website for the new school assignments for the upcoming year.
A few weeks ago, the Miami-Dade School District also started an unprecedented partnership with the private sector to reverse the ongoing loss of students.
