The deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, assured this Sunday that Venezuela "is healing," but warned that the country “cannot forget” the military attack by the United States that occurred on January 3, when his father and the First Lady, Cilia Flores, were captured by U.S. forces during an operation in Caracas.

"When we look in the mirror, we cannot forget what happened on January 3 and the calls for diplomacy and peace that we have been making," declared the parliamentarian during a religious gathering held at Plaza Bolívar in Caracas. The speech was broadcast by the state channel Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) and cited by EFE

Maduro Guerra stated that the attack caused "an injury" in the country, which is being "healed with faith and work." "We will continue to consolidate our country towards peace, towards the future, towards prosperity, and towards victory," he expressed.

However, he warned that "the mark of the military attack will remain for a lifetime."

The mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, also participated in the event and reiterated her call for national unity. She stated that the authorities are organizing "social initiatives" and are bringing "psychologists and psychiatrists" to the communities affected by the attacks that occurred in Caracas and the states of La Guaira, Miranda, and Aragua.

Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores remain incarcerated in a federal prison in New York after being transferred to the United States following their capture.

The interim president Delcy Rodríguez is promoting a reform of the hydrocarbons sector and is working to ensure that the relations between Caracas and Washington reach a positive outcome in this new chapter of the relationship between both governments.
