Pope Leo XIV expressed this Sunday his "great concern" over the rising tensions between Cuba and the United States, at the conclusion of the Sunday Angelus, from the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican.
During his speech, the pontiff urged the authorities of both countries to promote a "sincere and effective" dialogue to prevent violence and any actions that would increase the suffering of the Cuban people.
Subsequently, the Vatican shared the same message on the official X account.
"I have received with great concern news about an increase in tensions between Cuba and the United States of America, two neighboring countries. I join the message of the Cuban bishops, inviting all those responsible to promote a sincere and effective dialogue to avoid violence and any actions that may increase the suffering of the beloved Cuban people. May Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre assist and protect all the children of that cherished land!" wrote Pope Leo XIV.
The Pope's call comes amid growing tension between Havana and Washington, due to the tightening of sanctions against the regime on the island.
The Cuban government has intensified its nationalist rhetoric as the country endures one of the worst economic crises in recent decades, characterized by power outages, inflation, and a new wave of migration.
León XIV seeks to encourage dialogue and reconciliation, defending a people who are suffering the consequences of authoritarianism, scarcity, and political repression. The invocation of the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, patroness of Cuba, adds a pastoral and hopeful tone to his intervention.
