Cuba could be experiencing the coldest dawn in its history.
The Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) reported this Tuesday that at the Indio Hatuey station in the province of Matanzas, a minimum temperature of 0.1°C was recorded at 4:00 am.
This figure, although still awaiting official confirmation, would exceed the historical record of 0.6°C recorded in Bainoa, Mayabeque, on February 18, 1996.
Experts from the Forecasting Center of INSMET are analyzing the records to validate whether this is indeed a new national record.
If confirmed, this phenomenon would mark a climatic milestone for the country, highlighting an unusual episode of extreme cold in the Caribbean island.
The Indio Hatuey station, located in Matanzas, is a key point for monitoring temperatures in western Cuba, and specialists claim that the current atmospheric conditions, combined with a cold air mass coming from the north, have favored this significant drop in temperature.
Although the values are still under review, the news has already raised concerns among local authorities and the population, who are preparing to face a period of low temperatures that could impact daily life, health, and agriculture in some areas of the country.
INSMET has urged everyone to stay vigilant regarding official statements and to follow protective recommendations against intense cold, especially for the most vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
So far, this preliminary record would mark the lowest temperature documented in modern Cuban history, breaking a record that had stood for over 27 years and highlighting the climatic variability that the island has experienced in recent decades.
