The Los Angeles Dodgers announced this Tuesday that they designated Cuban infielder Andy Ibáñez for assignment (DFA), just weeks after having signed with the organization, reported the specialized page Pelota Cubana.

The aforementioned outlet recalled that the player had agreed to a one-year contract worth 1.2 million dollars on January 13, but is now off the 40-man roster following the team's latest move.

2025 Season of Andy Ibáñez

Ibáñez played the 2025 season with the Detroit Tigers, posting an offensive line of .239/.301/.352, with four home runs, 21 runs batted in, and a wRC+ of 92.

The Cuban spent the last three seasons within the Detroit organization before signing with the Dodgers in free agency.

He resigned from the 2026 World Baseball Classic

Initially, Ibáñez was committed to representing Cuba in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, but he declined to participate after finalizing his contract with Los Ángeles. The final rosters for the tournament were submitted this Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.

Uncertain future

With no options available to be sent directly to the minor leagues, it seems unlikely that another team will claim him via waivers. Therefore, it is expected that Ibáñez will either accept the assignment to Triple-A or decide to become a free agent.

Roster movement

The decision comes after the Dodgers claimed outfielder Michael Siani off waivers from the New York Yankees. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team designated Ibáñez for assignment.
