The renowned Cuban singer Willy Chirino, one of the most iconic voices of the exile community, celebrated 50 years of musical career and took the opportunity to share a heartfelt and direct reflection on the fate of Cuba.
In an interview with WPLG Local 10, the artist, born on the Island and forced to emigrate to the United States, spoke from his home in Pinecrest, Miami-Dade, about his journey, the impact of his music, and the feelings that have accompanied him for decades, carrying the pain of separation and the hope for a free Cuba.
"The struggle for Cuban freedom is like a roller coaster," Chirino said, in a statement that captures the emotional ups and downs experienced by several generations of Cubans both inside and outside the country.
According to the singer, there are moments when hope is strengthened, but there are also times when discouragement hits hard.
"Sometimes you feel better, sometimes you get really depressed," he confessed to journalist Aaron Maybin, making it clear that the passage of time has not erased the open wound that Cuba represents for millions of families.
Chirino, whose music has accompanied the life of exile for half a century, assured that his artistic longevity is due to something simple yet powerful. “Love what you do and be lucky enough to survive doing what you love,” he said.
During the conversation, the musician also spoke about how his work has served to narrate the Cuban drama and keep alive the memory of the Island in those who had to leave. His songs have captured the nostalgia, resilience, and collective desire for a different future.
In this regard, he mentioned the recent reactivation of themes such as “La Habana desea,” a song that brings back to the forefront the desire for a prosperous, free, and reconciled Cuba.
The artist also highlighted how social media has allowed him to connect with a younger audience, which he finds surprising and exciting.
"It's incredible... it once again shows that music has no borders and knows no age," he commented.
After 50 years of his career, Willy Chirino does not seem to be thinking about farewells. In fact, the report from Local 10 noted that the singer has a concert scheduled for March 21 in Fort Myers, Florida.
While celebrating his career, Chirino once again highlights a reality that many Cubans feel personally: the fatigue, the uncertainty, and the persistent hope that someday Cuba will change.
