A video posted on TikTok by Cuban creator @dieego_blogger has once again highlighted the high cost of living on the Island and the increasing reliance on external aid to meet basic needs.
In the video, the young man explains that a follower had been sending him money from abroad and that, in total, he received 10,000 Cuban pesos (CUP), an amount he used entirely to buy food and personal care products in Cuba.
"I live in Cuba and this is everything I bought with the money that a follower has been sending me," she states at the beginning of the video, while showing each product purchased and publicly thanking the gesture. "I want to thank that beautiful follower, because without her, we wouldn't have been able to make this purchase," she affirms.
According to the details, with the 10,000 CUP he was able to buy:
Two bags of rice, at 750 pesos each
Two pounds of beans for 1,000 pesos
A kilo of sugar for 700 pesos
A package of powdered milk (9 liters) for 2,000 pesos
One liter of oil for 1,300 pesos
A can of tomato paste for 500 pesos
Two packages of “El Abuelo” sausages
A small tube of picadillo for 700 pesos
A one-kilogram package of detergent for 1,000 pesos
Two bar soaps, at 150 pesos each
The creator clarifies that the money was completely depleted with this purchase, which consisted only of basic products in limited quantities, leading to numerous reactions among users of the platform.
The video has been commented on by Cubans inside and outside the country, who point out that 10,000 pesos are not enough to cover even a basic monthly purchase, reflecting the loss of purchasing power of salaries in Cuba and the precarious situation faced by millions of families.
This type of content has become increasingly common on social media, where citizens highlight the contrast between actual prices in the informal market and average incomes, in a context marked by inflation, shortages, and a reliance on remittances or supportive aid for survival.
