Rosa María Payá, commissioner of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), responded to the claims made by the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, stating that her recent visit to the country was academic in nature and undertaken in a personal capacity, not as part of an official mission.

"My recent visit to Mexico was of an academic nature in a personal capacity and not on an official mission," Payá stated on her X profile, referencing the controversy sparked by the statements of the Mexican president.

In addition, the commissioner stated emphatically that "defending democracy is not militarizing," but rather a right exercised with transparency and as part of a responsibility to which she has dedicated her life.

Her statements come after Sheinbaum criticized Payá's presence in Mexico this Wednesday for promoting actions against Cuba and noted that, if she attended on behalf of the IACHR, she should not support a political cause.

Payá took a stance following the question posed to the president during her morning conference, thereby marking a public contrast regarding the character and purpose of her visit.
