The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights office stated this Friday that the sanctions imposed by the United States against Cuba violate the UN Charter and international law.

They pointed out that the measures taken by the United States have a negative impact on essential sectors such as food, healthcare, and the water supply for the Cuban people.

According to the spokesperson for the organization, Marta Hurtado, such measures "affect the most vulnerable, are not effective, and do not comply with either the United Nations Charter or international law, because sanctions like these must be imposed by the Security Council (of the UN), not by a single country."

The office noted that sectoral sanctions lead to a "dismantling" of basic services, with direct consequences for the population.

U.S. authorities have repeatedly defended that their measures aim to pressure the Cuban government for human rights violations and a lack of political freedoms.
