Rusia has once again clashed with the Trump Administration over the new sanctions against the Cuban regime.

“It is a new and radical recurrence of Washington's repeated strategy of maximum pressure on the Island of Freedom, aimed at economically suffocating the island,” said María Zajárova, spokesperson for the Russian foreign ministry, according to EFE, this Saturday.

"Russia's stance on this matter remains unchanged: unilateral measures with a sanctioning impact against sovereign and independent states, adopted outside the framework of the UN and its Charter provisions, as well as other norms of International Law, are categorically unacceptable," he added.

The official stated that the Russian Foreign Ministry "strongly condemns the illegitimate restrictive measures against Havana, the pressure on the Cuban leadership, and the citizens of that country."

"We are convinced that, despite the external obstacles in its path to development, Cuba will continue to maintain effective external economic ties," he added.

Zajárova pointed out the fact that Russia is classified as a "hostile and malicious state" in the recent statement from the White House regarding the Island.

"Labeling does not contribute to stabilizing the Russian-American dialogue nor to enhancing the effectiveness of Washington's important mediating efforts to resolve crises in various regions around the world," he warned.

"We cannot accept attempts to create obstacles to international cooperation, especially with a country facing a complex socioeconomic situation, largely caused by the U.S. commercial, economic, and financial blockade that has lasted for nearly 70 years," he said.

The official believes that the relationship between Putin's regime and the Cuban one "cannot be considered detrimental to anyone's interests."

"We have a firm intention to develop it consistently for the benefit of the peoples of our States, and to strengthen international security and stability," he concluded.

The statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry add to those made by the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasili Nebenzia, who drew a parallel between the Venezuelan crisis and the future of Cuba amid rising tensions between Washington and Havana, following the surprising capture of Nicolás Maduro.

In statements to Russian state television, cited by the agency EFE, Nebenzia stated that  unlike Venezuela -where, according to the Kremlin, internal betrayal led to Maduro's downfall- in Cuba there are no fractures within the power structure.

"In Venezuela, without a doubt, a betrayal took place. This is something that is talked about very openly. A segment of the high-ranking officials, in fact, betrayed the president," he stated.

In response to the American blockade, the Kremlin has made diplomatic and military moves. In March 2025, Russia and Cuba signed a military cooperation agreement, further consolidating their strategic alliance.

More recently, the Russian Interior Minister, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, visited the island and met with Raúl Castro.

During that visit, Kolokóltsev strongly condemned the U.S. operation in Venezuela.
