The U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that President Donald Trump prioritizes diplomatic solutions regarding the situation with Iran, although he acknowledged that reaching an agreement will not be easy.

In statements shared by the State Department on social media platform X, Rubio stated that “the president always prefers peaceful outcomes and negotiated results.” He added that Trump “has shown his willingness to talk to anyone and meet with anyone.”

The head of U.S. diplomacy indicated that if there is an opportunity to reach a diplomatic agreement that addresses Washington's concerns, the United States will be "very open and receptive" to that possibility.

However, he warned that the process will be complex. "I don't want to exaggerate it either; it will be difficult," he stated. Rubio maintained that it has been "very difficult for anyone to reach real agreements with Iran" and asserted that the United States is dealing with "radical Shia clerics who are making theological decisions, not geopolitical ones."

The Secretary of State concluded cautiously, "Let's see what happens. I hope it works; we all hope it works."

His statements come as Washington and Tehran prepare for a new round of negotiations in Geneva regarding the Iranian nuclear program, mediated by Oman, amid disagreements over uranium enrichment and the lifting of sanctions.

In parallel, the U.S. military is preparing for the possibility of sustained operations lasting "weeks" against Iran if the president orders an attack, U.S. officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity. The Pentagon has bolstered its presence in the Middle East by sending a second aircraft carrier, in addition to combat planes and guided missile destroyers.

The evolution of the conversations in Geneva will shape the course of the current diplomatic phase between both countries.
