The airline World2Fly, part of the Iberostar hotel group, has canceled one of its two weekly flights between Spain and Cuba.
The information has come to light through the travel agency Cuba Tulike, which publicly announced it on its social media.
“W2FLY CANCELED SUNDAY FLIGHTS TO CUBA. From March 15 to June 28”, posted the agency on Facebook, in a message directed at its clients.
“We inform our clients that W2Fly has canceled operations on Sundays during that period,” reiterated Cuba Tulike, who assured that they are already managing the incidents.
“We are directly contacting our affected customers and reviewing the proposals for reassigned flights,” they added.
The agency stated that it has enabled immediate assistance through messaging: "If you have any questions, send us a WhatsApp right now at: 612 253 778 and we'll address everything immediately."
The cancellation effectively reduces the route between Madrid and Havana to a single weekly flight for over three months, in a context marked by the fuel crisis affecting the island.
Background: Refueling in Santo Domingo due to lack of fuel
The decision comes just a week after World2Fly announced a temporary modification in its operations due to a shortage of aviation fuel (JET A1) at Cuban airports.
"In response to the notification issued by Cuban authorities regarding the unavailability of aviation fuel (JET A1) at the country's international airports, W2Fly announced that, starting Wednesday, February 11, flights will include refueling in Santo Domingo," the airline stated in an official communication.
The company then emphasized that the measure only affected the outbound journey, that is, from Havana to Madrid, and that the rest of its commercial operations remained “completely normal.”
She also assured that "ticket sales remain available through the website and the usual channels," and that she would stay alert for any updates that would require revising the schedule.
Until that moment, World2Fly had maintained direct, non-stop flights between the Cuban capital and Madrid as part of the tourism strategy of the Iberostar group on the island.
A crisis that affects several airlines
The situation is not unique to World2Fly. In recent days, other companies connecting Cuba with Europe have had to adjust their operations due to a lack of fuel at José Martí International Airport.
Air Europa was the first to publicly announce changes.
"Due to the lack of fuel at José Martí International Airport, if you are traveling from Havana to Madrid on February 10, 11, and 12, we would like to inform you that, although our operations are confirmed, there will be some adjustments to the flights, and a technical stop for refueling in Santo Domingo will be necessary," the airline informed its passengers.
He also warned that the changes could affect arrival times in Madrid.
For its part, Iberia adopted a flexible policy for passengers with tickets already issued for travel to Cuba.
Although it has not announced technical stops, it noted in its latest statement: “There is no confirmation of cancellations, but we continue to monitor the availability of fuel at Cuban airports.”
