The president of Casa de las Américas and former Minister of Culture, Abel Prieto, stated that the “Selected Works of Raúl Castro Ruz” allow us to understand his leadership “in a new way” and emphasized that it is a privilege to have him as a guide.
The presentation of the nine volumes of the "Selected Works" of the Army General takes place amid a heated debate on social media regarding the possible conversations of Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro, the grandson and trusted aide of Raúl Castro.
The regime has denied that there is dialogue with the United States and termed the news as "speculations," but it could be the first structured attempt to negotiate a transition in Cuba, occurring outside the government of Miguel Díaz-Canel.
The government is bringing these books to light on a key date in Cuba's history, February 24th, a date that marks the renewal of the struggles for the nation's independence.
Abel Prieto stated that Raúl's leadership in Cuba has been different from that of Fidel Castro, but "completely continuative." He noted that this compilation helps to interpret the historical significance of the Army General within the Cuban revolutionary process.
Surprisingly, the prologue is signed by Miguel Díaz-Canel. The texts cover 70 years of Raúl's life, presented as “exemplary and heroic,” and as an ethical reference for revolutionary action.
The compilation brings together more than 500 documents spanning around 5,000 pages and is the result of four years of research work. It was published by the Cuban Institute of the Book amid the economic and fuel crisis affecting Cuba.
In the same presentation event, historian Elier Ramírez described the work as a “gift for Cuba and all revolutionaries” and as an “ethical compass and arsenal of ideas for the complex moment” the country is experiencing.
