Gloria Estefan's statements about the oil blockade on Cuba not only made headlines but also sparked an intense debate in the posts published on the topic. After the artist claimed that the oil blockade "is not a way to bring down any regime," the publications began to accumulate hundreds of comments, especially on Facebook, where the exchange on the profile of CiberCuba surpassed 2,000 messages.
One of the most common reactions was the demand for her to propose a concrete alternative. "Let her say what the way is to see if it works...", wrote one user. Others insisted along the same lines: "If you have the formula, we're all ears," "What's your idea?", "Do you have any idea?", "And what would your solution be?", and "Any other ideas?"
The direct questioning became the focal point of the exchange. “Well, then why haven’t you provided a solution in all these years?” commented another user. In similar terms, it was read: “And what have you done for Cuba? Nothing, you’d better not comment” or “So many years, and now you’re just starting to express your opinion.”
There were also those who defended the need for harsher pressure measures against the regime. “I believe that any means is valid as long as the dictatorship goes,” stated one comment. In the same vein, someone wrote: “It’s the dictatorship that is punishing the people! It’s unbelievable!”
In the post shared on X, the exchange was equally intense. Among the responses, messages such as: “Provide options for escaping the dictatorship” and “Just to go against Trump…” were read. Personal attacks also emerged.
Although the exchange highlighted the polarization generated by any debate on sanctions and their impact on Cuba, and support messages were abundant, for many commentators, after more than six decades of regime, any pressure is justified if it contributes to political change. Others, however, agree with the artist that the burden ultimately falls on the population.
In the interview granted to the EFE agency during the Viña del Mar Festival, Estefan stated that “it is not a way to bring down any regime” and affirmed that “The only sanctions that have occurred in Cuba have been imposed by the government on the Cubans themselves.” She also expressed that any change would have to come from within: “It has to come from the Cuban people, saying: ‘This is it, we don’t want more.’ And that is difficult, because every time something happens, young people are taken prisoner.”
His words reignited a sensitive discussion filled with accumulated frustration, as evidenced by the hundreds of comments that accompanied the posts.
