A young Cuban turned a flooded street into an improvised surfing spot, in a video that has gone viral on TikTok and other social media due to the unusual nature of the scene.
The images, shared by the user @ellocodeplaya, show the boy sliding on a handmade board in the middle of a stream of water that crosses the road, following heavy rains that left the area completely flooded.
In the video, the young man, barefoot and with goggles perched on his head, propels himself with the help of a rope while several children and teenagers run around him, filled with laughter and shouts of excitement.
The makeshift "surfer" uses a wooden board secured with nails and manages to keep his balance as the water rushes strongly down the street, transformed into a small channel. On either side of the road, overflowing containers and piles of garbage are visible, swept away by the current.
The scene reflects not only the creativity to have fun amidst difficulties but also the precariousness of the drainage system in many Cuban neighborhoods, where every heavy rain causes flooding and waste accumulation.
At various moments in the video, the young man manages to glide several meters while two friends run in front of him holding the rope that provides his momentum, until he finally loses his balance and falls into the water, amidst laughter.
The clip has generated hundreds of reactions on social media, where some users celebrate the ingenuity and sense of humor in the face of adversity, while others point out the health risks of exposing oneself to potentially contaminated waters.
Urban flooding is a recurring problem in many places across the country, due to the deterioration of hydraulic infrastructure and the accumulation of garbage in streets and drains.
