The Cuba team participating in the World Baseball Classic suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday in an exhibition game held at Surprise Stadium in Arizona as part of its preparation for the international tournament.
The Cuban pitching allowed eight hits, five of which were against starter Denny Larrondo, who worked two innings and gave up three earned runs. In total, the island's pitchers issued four walks and struck out nine opponents.
On the offensive, Roel Santos (4-2) was the most productive batter for the Cuban team. Yoan Moncada (3-1, walk) and Omar Hernández (2-1, walk) also reached base more than once. The other hit for the team was recorded by first baseman Malcom Núñez.
In total, Cuba managed six hits, but could not score runs against the Royals' pitching.
Next opponent: Cincinnati
The Cuban team will continue its preparations this Wednesday as it faces the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear Ballpark, before traveling later in the evening to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where it will compete in the initial phase of the World Baseball Classic.
For that game, left-hander Julio Robaina, 24 years old, is scheduled to start. He has experience in the minor leagues of the Houston Astros and has also pitched in professional leagues in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico.
