The Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed on Wednesday his support for Iran and Lebanon amid the military escalation in the Middle East, stating that Cuba and those countries are united by "bonds of friendship and cooperation."
In a message posted on social media, Díaz-Canel stated that Cuba joins the international calls to put an end “immediately to the violation of International Law” and denounced an “aggression from the U.S. and Israel” which, he said, includes “political assassinations and indiscriminate attacks.”
The leader stated that the current escalation could have "unpredictable consequences for all the peoples in the region, as well as for international peace, security, and stability."
Díaz-Canel advocated for respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nations in the region and noted that Cuba shares "bonds of friendship and cooperation" with the Arab Gulf states.
He also reaffirmed the call to uphold the principle of good neighborliness, moderation, and dialogue as means to address the conflict.
In another recent post, the leader extended condolences to the Iranian government following the death of the supreme leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reiterating Havana's solidarity with Tehran.
The statements generated mixed reactions on social media. Some users criticized the official stance and questioned how the Cuban government can speak of respect for sovereignty while facing accusations of internal repression. Others defended Cuba's historical position in opposing foreign military interventions.
