Former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa launched a harsh criticism against Daniel Noboa's government this Wednesday following the official decision to declare the Cuban ambassador in Quito, Basilio Antonio Gutiérrez García, as a "persona non grata," and to extend this measure to all diplomatic, consular, and administrative staff of the Cuban mission in Ecuador.

Correa described the action as a disgrace and stated that upon learning about it, he thought it was "a joke."

"Minions trying to earn some merit. What a shame!" wrote Correa on the social network X, before directly attacking Noboa with insults and accusations.

He stated that the president “not only destroys Ecuador, but also the Greater Homeland.”

In his post, Correa stated, "When I heard it, I thought it was a joke," and attributed the decision to what he described as an error by the electorate in choosing Noboa.

In the same message, he attached a cartoon featuring an image of a cat and a manual that read: "How to keep defending Noboa without looking like an idiot."

The declaration of "non grata" was issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador and includes a 48-hour deadline for the Cuban ambassador and the rest of the mission staff to leave Ecuadorian territory.

The cited document does not specify the reasons for the expulsion; it only refers to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

Alongside the expulsion of Cuban staff, the Noboa government also ended the functions of José María Borja López as Ecuador's ambassador to Cuba, a position he had held since 2021, according to the text.

No official explanations are included in the text regarding the specific reason for the measure, nor is there a public response from the Cuban side.
