The Cuban chef Manuel Herrera endured an ordeal that few could withstand: he crossed Spain, Ecuador, Panama, and Mexico before reaching the southern border, where he applied for asylum through the CBP One app.

Instead of the freedom he was seeking, he was detained by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and transferred to the Adelanto Detention Center in California, reported Univisión.

"Freedom is the most valued treasure of humanity, and that is what I feel at this moment," Herrera declared with emotion.

"It was a miracle, a complete dream from the start because I didn't have much hope", he added.

During the six months he spent in detention, Manuel found solace in faith and friendship.

In the center, she met Roberto Guzmán, a Mexican chef detained by immigration in the city of Corona.

“She was the first person I connected with through food. We are both cooks, and that brought us together during the entire time I was involved with him,” he recalled.

Roberto was released in June 2025 and, far from forgetting his companion, kept his promise.

She sought a lawyer, raised funds, and began helping other detainees, ultimately achieving Manuel's freedom.

"Gratitude, he is a man who promised me and kept his promise, and here I am free thanks to him," expressed the Cuban.

Today, Manuel works in a restaurant and celebrates each day as a new opportunity.

"Whether as a dishwasher, a chef, or whatever it may be, we must thank God," he stated.

Her next dream is to reunite with her son and mother in Cuba.

"They're happy, crazy to see me, and I'm crazy to see them. That's the very first thing I'm going to do," he said with a smile.

However, the story is not over yet. Roberto Guzmán's case is still in court, and his immigration status remains uncertain.

"I told him that I won't fully achieve it until yours is fulfilled too," Manuel assured as he described that his happiness isn't complete while his friend and support isn't fully secure in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Cuban chef continues to prepare to obtain his driver's license and complete the paperwork for his permanent residency.

Her story has become a symbol of hope, faith, and solidarity among migrants.
