The President of the United States, Donald Trump, described the election of Mojtaba Jameneí as the new supreme leader of Iran as a “serious mistake,” amid the military conflict facing Tehran with Washington and Israel.
In statements to the NBC network, reported by the agency EFE, the U.S. president questioned the Iranian leadership's decision to place the son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the helm of the country.
"I believe they made a big mistake. I don't know if it will last. I think they made a mistake," Trump stated.
The appointment of Mojtaba Jameneí came following the death of his father, Alí Jameneí, who had governed Iran for over three decades and passed away during the initial strikes of the "Epic Fury" operation, a military offensive launched by the United States and Israel on February 28 against Iranian strategic targets.
International analysts believe that the election of a new supreme leader could heighten tensions in the region, as it takes place amid a military escalation and Iranian reprisals against U.S. and Israeli interests in the Middle East.
The war between Iran, the United States, and Israel has triggered a regional crisis with global repercussions, including rising oil prices, threats to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and an increase in military operations in the area.
