“Students are standing on the steps of the University of Havana. They are surrounded by the political police. I live nearby, and State Security has me under siege,” wrote the journalist on Facebook.

The peaceful sit-in on the steps of the University of Havana (UH) this Monday, led by around twenty students, aims to protest against the academic conditions and the hybrid learning model that several universities in the country are maintaining amid the ongoing electricity crisis.

According to testimonies from students cited by activist Magdiel Jorge Castro on social media, the unrest arises from the regime's decision to continue with remote classes despite the frequent power outages and connectivity issues affecting a large part of the country.

Students believe that the current energy situation hinders stable access to the internet and limits participation in virtual academic activities, which, in their view, makes the continuity of this teaching format unfeasible.

Discontent is not limited to the University of Havana. According to the same student sources, there is also reported unrest at other institutions such as CUJAE and the University of Computer Sciences (UCI).

Amid the tension, the administration of the University of Havana has reportedly moved up a management meeting originally scheduled for this Monday to Sunday, with the aim of analyzing the situation created by student discontent.

Journalist Patrick Oppmann from CNN confirmed on the social media platform X that "a group of about 20 students" is holding a peaceful protest at the university.

"Happening now: A group of about 20 students is staging a peaceful sit-in to protest the conditions at the University of Havana," said the correspondent.
