A group of students held a peaceful sit-in on the steps of the University of Havana (UH) this Monday to protest the academic conditions and the hybrid learning format maintained by several universities in the country amid the ongoing electricity crisis.
According to testimonies from students cited by activist Magdiel Jorge Castro on social media, the discontent arises from the regime's decision to continue with remote classes despite the frequent power outages and connectivity issues that affect a large part of the country.
Students believe that the current energy situation hinders stable access to the internet and limits participation in virtual academic activities, which, in their view, makes the continuation of that teaching format unfeasible.
Dissatisfaction is not limited to the University of Havana. According to the same student sources, discontent is also reported at other institutions such as CUJAE and the University of Computer Sciences (UCI).
Amid the tension, the management of the University of Havana has reportedly moved up a board meeting originally scheduled for this Monday to Sunday, in order to analyze the situation generated by student discontent.
The journalist Patrick Oppmann, from CNN, confirmed on the social network X that “a group of about 20 students” is holding a peaceful protest at the university.
"Happening now: A group of about 20 students is staging a peaceful sit-in to protest the conditions at the University of Havana," said the correspondent.
