On March 6, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Cuban citizen José Adalberto Miranda Espino in Boston, who had an outstanding final order of deportation since 2001 and a criminal record for serious offenses.
According to the office of ICE in Boston, Miranda Espino was arrested by immigration agents after it was confirmed that he was in the country illegally. The man has previous convictions for second-degree murder and possession of burglary tools.
According to the authorities, an immigration judge issued a final order for his deportation from the country on January 18, 2001, although he remained in U.S. territory.
The arrest occurs amid the strengthening of the immigration policy promoted by the federal government, which has intensified operations against immigrants with criminal records.
However, the topic has also generated controversy in recent weeks. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently acknowledged that the website created to showcase the so-called “worst of the worst” detained immigrants contained errors in the description of some offenses.
A CNN investigation revealed that thousands of people were linked to serious crimes when in reality they faced minor offenses, such as traffic fines or possession of marijuana.
The DHS attributed the inconsistencies to a "technical failure" that affected approximately five percent of the entries and assured that the problem has already been corrected. The list includes Cuban citizens detained in states such as Florida, Texas, and Minnesota, among others.
