The Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi sparked debate following his recent appearance on the Spanish show El Hormiguero, where he spoke about the immigration situation in the United States and the atmosphere that, according to him, currently exists in the country.
During the interview with Pablo Motos, the artist was asked about immigration policies and the role of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Fonsi acknowledged that it is a sensitive topic and stated that he perceives a great deal of division in society.
“The issue of the ICE is difficult. I believe there are some people who do regret voting for Trump and others who don’t. I would like to think that there is a percentage of people who do,” commented the interpreter of "Despacito" during the conversation.
The singer also emphasized the need to seek understanding amid political debate. "We must strive for unity. I understand that there needs to be laws," he explained, referring to immigration policies.
However, he pointed out that, from his perspective, the treatment of some immigrants and Latinos has changed. “The way immigrants and Latinos are treated… to the point that I carry my passport, as well as my children's. They look at you differently”, he stated.
Her words quickly sparked reactions on social media, with some users agreeing with her stance, while others rejected her statements and defended the current immigration policies in the United States.
