Luis Alfonso Rodríguez López-Cepero, known artistically as Luis Fonsi, is a Puerto Rican singer, songwriter, and actor born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on April 15, 1978.
Fonsi is one of the leading figures in the world of Pop, romantic ballads, and reggaeton, thanks to his worldwide success in 2017 alongside his compatriot Daddy Yankee with the song "Despacito," described as an "international phenomenon" and a cultural heritage of humanity.
The song was written by the Panamanian singer-songwriter Erika Ender, Fonsi, Giancarlos Morales, and Daddy Yankee. The music video, filmed entirely in Puerto Rico with local residents and actress, model, and Puerto Rican Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera, has surpassed 6 billion views, making it the only video to reach this milestone in YouTube's history.
The song reached the number one position in over 80 countries. The English version featuring Justin Bieber topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Additionally, it won four Latin Grammy Awards in 2017 for Best Song, Best Recording, Best Urban Fusion/Performance, and Best Short Form Music Video
Before "Despacito," Fonsi was already an established singer in America, Spain, and other countries. With his debut album in 1998, "Comenzaré," he was nominated by Billboard for the Best New Artist of the Year and earned a gold record. Later, in 2000, he released "Eterno," and its single "Imagíname sin ti" climbed to the top position of Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks that year. In 2002, he published his third album, "Amor secreto," which achieved gold status in a single day of sales for over 100,000 copies sold, just in Puerto Rico and the United States.
Fonsi was also very beloved in America for his relationship with Puerto Rican telenovela actress Adamari López, with whom he had a strong bond and who he supported during her tough battle against breast cancer, which she ultimately overcame. The song "Paso a paso" from this period of his life is part of the album of the same name (2005), which earned him a gold record in Spain.
Currently, Fonsi is married to the Spanish model Agueda López, with whom he has two children.
Following the success of Despacito, the Puerto Rican artist has participated in multiple collaborations, producing popular titles such as: Échame la culpa with Demi Lovato, which has amassed over two billion views on YouTube three years after its release, and Imposible alongside his fellow countryman Ozuna.
In 2019, he/she released his/her album Vida.
In September 2019, he joined Ricky Martin to show his support for the candidate Joe Biden in Florida.
In September 2020, he released his latest collaboration, Perfecta, with Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Farruko.
