The head of the United States diplomatic mission in Cuba, Mike Hammer, visited the Convent of the Servants of Mary in Vedado, Havana, this Friday, where the nuns provide medical assistance and support to elderly members of the community.
The visit was announced by the Embassy of the United States in Cuba through its social media. According to the message, during the tour, Hammer spoke with several elderly individuals cared for by the nuns and highlighted the work they do.
"The tremendous work and dedication of the nuns is clear," stated the embassy, referring to the efforts of the religious women in caring for the elderly.
During the meeting, the nuns mentioned that they stay informed about current events in Cuba through media such as Martí Noticias and journalist Mario J. Pentón.
Precisely, Pentón recounted on social media that he received a call from the diplomat while he was on his way to work.
"I was driving to work when I received an unexpected call from the esteemed ambassador Mike Hammer, during one of his many visits to Cuba. This time he was meeting with a group of nuns, interested in how to assist elderly Cubans," the journalist wrote.
The diplomat's visit is part of a series of tours and meetings conducted recently in various sectors of Cuban society, where he has expressed interest in the social situation and living conditions of the population, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly.
Hammer's presence at the convent also sparked reactions on social media, where several users expressed gratitude for the work of the nuns and conveyed concerns about the economic difficulties many elderly people face on the island.
