The President of the United States, Donald Trump, praised the Cubans who emigrated to the country and achieved economic success, highlighting their work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit.
During a press conference where he discussed Cuba and the role of the Cuban exile community, Trump stated that many of those who left the island have managed to build significant fortunes after starting anew in the United States.
"I know many people from Cuba who were treated very poorly and came here and became rich. They are very enterprising and very intelligent people," said the leader.
As an example, he mentioned the Cuban-American Fanjul family, one of the most influential business dynasties in the Cuban exile community and a key player in the sugar industry in the United States.
Trump explained that he recently met with members of that family and they expressed their desire to return to Cuba, something they have not been able to do for decades.
"I also know a fantastic person who is Cuban and made a fortune with sugar. You know, the Fanjul family. This family wants to return to Cuba to visit it. They haven't been there in about 50 years," he commented.
Trump's statements came as he spoke about the future of Cuba and the potential role that exiled Cubans and their descendants could play in a possible political change scenario on the island.
The leader also emphasized the potential of the Caribbean country despite the crisis it is currently facing.
"It's a beautiful island, with good weather and great people," he stated, although he described Cuba as "a very weakened nation" after decades under the control of the communist regime.
