The editor of Forbes, Steve Forbes, stated that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, has a key opportunity to increase pressure on the Cuban regime and force political transformations on the island.
"Trump has the opportunity to pressure Cuba to achieve real change," he posted on Twitter while sharing an article published in Washington Examiner on the topic.
It states that "Keeping military options on the table, cutting off the regime’s financial flows, and supporting the Cuban people could finally challenge seven decades of communist rule."
On the other hand, the article from Washington Examiner shared by the businessman and analyst mentions that the Cuban regime is facing increasing protests and more intense blackouts; however, this is not enough to topple the government.
While President Donald Trump reiterates almost daily that he hopes to have the "honor" of "taking Cuba in some way," and the regime of Raúl Castro is beginning to feel the pressure of the oil quarantine, "greater pressure may still be needed for the Trump administration to reach an agreement that encourages political change in Cuba."
“After all, the regime established by the late dictator Fidel Castro has survived multiple crises for over seven decades: the Missile Crisis, the fall of the Soviet Union, and more recently, the massive protests of 2021, after which nearly one-fifth of the population left the country,” recalled the article shared by Forbes on X.
The situation arises in a context where Washington has increased pressure on Havana, while the island is facing a severe energy crisis, widespread blackouts, and social protests.
Also remember that Miguel Díaz-Canel himself acknowledged conversations with the United States after months without a stable fuel supply; despite the fact that his allies, Russia and Mexico, have sent humanitarian aid and oil.
Forbes' statements add to other voices in the United States advocating for a tougher stance towards the Cuban regime, amid a context of negotiations, economic crisis, and increasing social tension within the country.
