A man carrying a baby in his arms became the star of a viral video by tackling an alleged thief at the Dolphin Mall in Miami, Florida.
The clip, lasting around 35 seconds, was posted by the Instagram account OnlyinDade on Saturday and quickly spread across social media, accumulating over 660,000 views and more than 63,000 likes on that platform in just two days.
The video was also shared on Facebook by Puerto Rican journalist and news presenter Jorge Viera, exceeding 204,000 views, and by the page Quepasaendoral, dedicated to news in the Doral area.
The incident occurred in one of the busiest shopping malls in South Florida, located in the Sweetwater-Doral area of Miami-Dade County.
In the video, a woman can be heard shouting loudly, "Grab him, he stole from me! Grab him, he robbed me! Help!!!" as she points her finger at an individual sprinting down a corridor in the shopping mall, carrying a bag in one hand and a box in the other, while no one took action to stop him.
Then, a man carrying a small girl or boy intervened by tripping the thief, who fell to the ground, scattering the sunglasses that were in the stolen box from one of the stores. Seeing his robbery attempt thwarted, the man got up and fled.
The clip shows the woman who reported the theft picking up the glasses and celebrating with some young people, to whom she expresses her gratitude.
The original post from "Only in Dade" described the video with the text "Dolphin mall shoplifter gets the business", while the page "Quepasaendoral" shared it with the description: "An alleged theft was thwarted by a visitor to Dolphin Mall who did not hesitate to help, even while holding their little one in their arms. A hero without a cape."
Jorge Viera also commented on the incident: "He tried to rob Dolphin Mall… and ended up receiving more than he bargained for. The moment was captured and is now circulating across all social media, sparking debate among those who praise the reaction and those who question how the situation was handled. The reality is that in a matter of seconds, what started as a robbery ended in a viral spectacle."
The video sparked a wide debate on social media. While many users praise the man's courage, others question the risks involved in intervening physically while holding a minor. In Florida, the law allows the use of reasonable force to detain someone committing a crime in the presence of a citizen, although experts warn about the physical and legal risks of such interventions.
The Dolphin Mall has been a recurring site of thefts and arrests. In December 2025, five Argentine citizens were arrested for stealing merchandise valued at around 2,000 dollars from stores like Burlington and Tommy Hilfiger, and in November, the police arrested four Chilean young men for assaulting a shopper and stealing jewelry worth 3,000 dollars.
The last month of the year, the mall implemented for the third consecutive year the "Safe Holidays" operation, which includes drones, cameras, undercover agents, and a mobile command center, achieving a 34% reduction in crimes during 2025. Despite these security measures, robberies continue to be a recurring problem in the shopping center; previous cases, such as the one that ended with the arrest of a man for stealing clothes in January 2023, also demonstrate this.
This new incident demonstrates that, at times, it is the visitors of Dolphin Mall themselves who take the initiative to stop the thefts, considering all the personal risks and legal consequences involved.
