The Cuban singer Srta Dayana revealed that, like many Cubans, she could not hold back her tears the first time she entered a supermarket after leaving Cuba, while commenting on Instagram about a post regarding a 62-year-old Cuban who cried upon entering a supermarket in Spain.
The artist, originally from Camagüey, reacted to the viral video of the man who cried upon entering a supermarket in Spain for the first time, overwhelmed by the abundance of available products. The clip was posted on TikTok by his daughter, identified as Yanela (@yane_cubana), with the description: "Day 1 in Spain, first stop is the supermarket. He cries from excitement or from the feeling of seeing so many things."
In her comment, Ms. Dayana shared her own story: "The first time I left Cuba was to Spain, and the first thing they did when I got off the plane was take me to a supermarket, so I could buy (according to them) the little things I was used to eating. Just like this gentleman, I couldn't hold back my tears when I entered the supermarket," the artist wrote.
The video of the 62-year-old Cuban surpassed two million views on TikTok in less than 48 hours, with 223,300 likes and more than 2,100 comments. Among the most common reactions to the clip are phrases like "He deserves that and much more" and "This gentleman makes me feel warm inside."
The scene featuring that man and Ms. Dayana's testimony reflects a recurring phenomenon on social media: Cubans reacting with tears or astonishment upon entering a supermarket outside the island for the first time.
The chronic shortage of basic products, the lack of supply, and the dependence on informal markets that characterize daily life in Cuba make the abundance of a supermarket abroad overwhelming for those who arrive for the first time.
