The Cuban baseball player Jorlis Esteban Bravo Hernández, 21 years old, arrived in the Dominican Republic in March 2025 with the aim of signing with a Major League organization, according to reported specialized journalist Francys Romero.
The natural prospect from Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín province, arrives on the Caribbean island after being crowned Rookie of the Year of the 64th season of Cuban baseball.
Bravo closed the 2024-2025 season with numbers that positioned him among the best hitters in the national circuit: an average of .386, third in the league, with an OBP of .480 and an OPS of 1.029.
In 223 at-bats, he accumulated 71 hits, 44 runs batted in, 41 scored, 4 home runs, and 19 extra-base hits, for a slugging percentage of .549. Specialized sources in Cuban baseball described him as "the most complete rookie in Cuban baseball."
His defensive versatility —able to play both in the infield and the outfield— is complemented by the fact that he is a switch hitter, a combination that makes him a particularly attractive prospect for MLB scouts. He will be represented by the agency GodsPlan Sports Consulting and will train at the José Fortuna Academy in San Pedro de Macorís, an elite Dominican coach who has worked with stars like Miguel Cabrera and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
This is not the first time Bravo has attempted the journey to the Major Leagues from the Dominican Republic. In February 2024, he had already left Cuba with that aim, but returned to the island months later and participated in Series 64, where he gained the recognition that now supports his second attempt. The involvement of a representation agency and a defined training destination indicates a more structured strategy this time.
The case of Bravo is part of a sustained exodus of Cuban players who use the Dominican Republic as a platform for entering Major League Baseball. During the 2024-2025 international signing period, 41 Cuban players signed contracts with MLB organizations, positioning Cuba as the fourth country with the most agreements, following the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Mexico.
In 2025, Cuba achieved a historical record with 26 players on the MLB Opening Day rosters, surpassing the previous record of 23. By January 2026, five young Cubans signed with the Athletics, the Padres, the Royals, and the Astros, while Karel Naranjo and Rothelmnay Marquetti finalized agreements with the Cleveland Guardians and the Pittsburgh Pirates, respectively.
The magnitude of the phenomenon is illustrated by a revealing figure: of the Cuban U-15 team that participated in the Hermosillo World Cup in 2022, approximately 95% of its members had left the country in just 14 months. Bravo, at 21 years old and with the award for best rookie of Series 64 to his name, aspires to become the next Cuban name to join the rosters of Major League Baseball.
