The Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences announced this Tuesday that Daddy Yankee is the Person of the Year 2026, becoming the first reggaeton artist to receive the highest honor from the institution in its entire history.
The announcement came through the official Latin Grammy account on X, accompanied by a promotional announcement dedicated to the Puerto Rican artist, whose real name is Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez.
"Pioneer, visionary, and key figure in the global expansion of reggaeton, his legacy has transformed Latin music for nearly three decades, paving the way for a new generation. With this recognition, we celebrate his extraordinary artistic journey, cultural impact, and humanitarian commitment, which have made him a role model for generations," the institution emphasized.
So far, no reggaeton artist has achieved this recognition, making this appointment a historical milestone for the Latin urban genre. The private tribute gala is scheduled for November 11.
His farewell tour, "La Última Vuelta," attracted over 1.9 million people across 83 dates, establishing itself as one of the most attended farewells in Latin music. After retiring from the stage, the artist released "Lamento en Baile," his first Christian-themed album, marking a spiritual turn in his career.
