From the comfort of his privileged life, Sandro Castro published a video on his Instagram stories on Tuesday to remind Cubans that they will not be able to import vehicles for one or two months, while also promoting his appearance on a "luxury podcast in New York."
“Gentlemen, stay very alert because I’m about to share the link to an interview I had, which was really good, with the best podcast in New York, as Bad Bunny says. That interview is going to be excellent,” he said.
Sandro is gradually becoming a notable figure on social media, with international projection. Last week, an interview with him was published by CNN, in which he stated that his bar in Havana cost him "only" 50,000 dollars, a figure equivalent to more than 200 years of the average Cuban salary, which barely exceeds twenty dollars a month.
The grandson of Fidel Castro, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Havana with nearly 160,000 followers on Instagram, also addressed alleged questions from Cuban users regarding the suspension of car import options, primarily from the United States.
It is completely stopped but it won't be forever. It's just a matter of a month, maybe two, due to logistical issues. And yes, vehicles cannot be imported at the moment.
The real reason is not logistics. The Ministry of Foreign Trade issued an order on February 19 signed by the First Deputy Minister Carlos Luis Jorge Méndez, suspending the importation of internal combustion vehicles due to the fuel crisis affecting Cuba, which is experiencing power outages of up to twenty hours a day in some provinces.
The measure affects new hires, shipments, and contracts that have already been signed and are awaiting dispatch, with exceptions only for diplomats, cooperators, and crew members of ships and aircraft.
That it is precisely he who reminds Cubans of the restriction on car imports is particularly painful.
In March 2021, Sandro Castro had to issue a public apology after a viral video in which he boasted about driving a Mercedes-Benz at high speed on the highway.
In July 2025, he made headlines again when he was stranded in the capital in a luxurious two-seater convertible. Recently, he has released videos on a motorcycle to comment on the fuel crisis in Cuba.
Since 2023, Cuba had allowed individuals and small businesses to import vehicles, mainly from the United States. The imports amounted to over 20 million dollars.
