The content creator Aisha Descane published a Reel on Instagram yesterday, humorously listing the habits that reveal having grown up in a Latin family, with references that any Cuban will instantly recognize.
The video, lasting 54 seconds, gathered more than 127,000 views and 17,180 likes in less than 24 hours, confirming that the topic resonates strongly with the Cuban and Latin diaspora on social media.
The first point mentioned by Descane is daily rice, a staple in any Cuban household. "What I notice the most is that when I travel with my friends, it feels really strange not to eat rice every day because in our house we eat rice every day for lunch, for dinner, and come on, the only thing missing is for breakfast," she comments with laughter, referring to iconic dishes like congrí or moros y cristianos that hold a special symbolic weight in Cuban culture.
The tradition of roasted pork also emerges as an inevitable reference. It's no coincidence that a Cuban restaurant in Madrid sold 200 roasted pork shoulders for Christmas and New Year's, a testament to how these customs travel with the Cuban community wherever they settle.
Another habit that Descane highlights is the passing down of accent and vocabulary from a young age, reminiscent of a viral video featuring a Cuban mother living in Italy teaching her son Cuban slang, which sparked a wave of knowing comments on social media.
The video also touches on the small domestic rituals that define Latin identity, such as turning the oil bottle, reusing containers, and other customs that, far from being a source of shame, have become symbols of identity that the diaspora embraces with pride and nostalgia.
