The Cuban actress Zelma Morales passed away this weekend, as announced on Facebook by colleagues and friends from the Cuban artistic community, leaving a deep sorrow among those who knew her and among the audience that followed her for decades.
The news was shared by the actor Albertico Pujol, who has known her since his youth, with a personal message on Facebook: "It's devastating to know that Zelma will no longer be with us. It's very sad."
Pujol also recalled the special bond they shared: "I will never forget that during a very difficult time for me, Zelma offered her shoulder and supported me. I loved her very much, and we all have always loved her, since school."
The actor concluded his message with words addressed to the son of the deceased: "To her son Fabián, as always, my support and admiration. Rest in peace our sister Zelma. Zelma, I love you! Thank you for your joy and your art!"
The profile of Facebook for "La casa de Maka" also expressed condolences for the passing of the artist, who was a guest on the show a few years ago.
"We have lost Zelma Morales, and she is not just an actress departing; she is a woman who leaves behind a legacy. We were fortunate to have her on our program, and I still remember that night, beautiful and heartfelt. Always with a calm light, natural elegance, and a truth that was palpable," the text expresses.
On her part, activist Lara Crofs posted on a text in which she describes her as a brilliant actress and a courageous woman: "Even after leaving Cuba and settling in Miami, she never stopped raising her voice for freedom and human rights. Her legacy combines artistic talent with personal integrity."
Born in Caibarién, Villa Clara, Zelma Morales trained at the National School of Art (ENA) and began her theatrical career in Havana, where she was part of the Artistic Ensemble of the FAR, the Bertolt Brecht Political Theatre, and Teatro Mío.
Her television debut came in 1984 with the series "La frontera del deber," followed by the series Finlay (1987), in which she portrayed the wife of the esteemed Cuban doctor and scientist.
However, it was the telenovela "Hoy es siempre todavía" (1987) that made her famous. There, she played a university professor who had a romance with a younger man (Francisco Gattorno), a conflict that generated controversy at the time.
The performance that definitively established her was in the telenovela "Tierra Brava" (1997), where she played two characters: Regina, the mother of Verena, and her twin sister Reina, a nun.
Her career also included productions such as "Si me pudieras querer" (1997), "Destino prohibido" (2000), "A pesar de todo" (2003), "Polvo en el viento" (2008), "Santa María del Porvenir" (2011), and "En tiempos de amar" (2017), her last telenovela known in Cuba.
He emigrated to the United States in 2018 to reunite with his only son, Fabián.
The young man is the result of the relationship between her and the late actor Max Álvarez, son of the also actor Pedro Álvarez. Fabián has also followed in the artistic footsteps of his parents and grandfather.
Since moving to that country, Zelma has stayed away from the artistic scene.
So far, the causes of his death have not been revealed.
