The Argentine Javier Mascherano announced his resignation as head coach of Inter Miami CF for personal reasons, bringing an end to a period of just 16 months that turned out to be the most successful in the club's history.

The Argentine, who took office in January 2025, replacing Gerardo Martino, bids farewell after leading the team to their first MLS Cup in history and a 2025 season that broke all the league's records.

"For personal reasons, I have decided to end my time as coach of Inter Miami CF," declared Mascherano in the club's official statement.

The coach thanked the institution, the employees, the players, and the fans: "I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best."

Under his leadership, Inter Miami won the MLS Cup on December 6, 2025, defeating 3-1 the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final, as well as the Eastern Conference Championship.

The team set the MLS historical record with 101 combined goals between the regular season and playoffs, including 20 postseason goals, also a record, in a season that spanned 58 matches across all competitions.

On the international stage, Inter Miami made history at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 by becoming the first MLS club to reach the knockout stage, and the first team from Concacaf to defeat a European opponent in an official international match.

The majority owner Jorge Mas highlighted the legacy of the coach: "Javier will forever be part of the history of this club and will always have a special place in the family of Inter Miami CF, not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements like winning the MLS Cup and the team's historic performance in the Club World Cup, but also for the example he set with his dedication and daily work."

Mascherano leaves along with the entire coaching staff that arrived with him in January 2025.

Guillermo Hoyos will take on the role of head coach for the upcoming matches. Hoyos has over twenty years of experience as a professional player and has managed clubs in Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Greece, and Cyprus, in addition to having served as the national team coach for Bolivia.

At the same time, Alberto Marrero, executive director of football for the club, will take on the role of sporting director starting today.

The departure of Mascherano occurs in the middle of the 2026 season, with Lionel Messi renewed until 2028 and the club in the process of consolidating after the brightest cycle in its short history.
