A Cuban resident in Dallas, Texas, shared on TikTok the result of years of hard work and sacrifice: the house she bought in Cuba for her mother and her children, which she proudly calls "my American dream."
Sandra, known on TikTok as @sandra.brat3, posted a nearly four-minute video this past Wednesday in which she tours the property and shares, with an honesty that moved thousands, how all of this became possible.
When she emigrated to the United States, Sandra left her family in their little house in Cuba: two rooms, a small patio, and no parking space. Her goal from day one was to find them something bigger.
What was found exceeded that goal by far. The new property is actually the combination of two houses: they had to tear down the wall in between to create a single dwelling with six rooms, featuring a large patio that accommodates two cars, a terrace, and space for raising animals. The house spans from one block to another.
"This was my little house in Cuba, when I came here to fulfill a dream and my dream was to find a bigger place," Sandra explains in the video as she shows every corner of the property in various stages of renovation.
On her last visit to the island, Sandra oversaw the renovations and decoration. The dining room now has a style that she herself describes as "completely Mexican," and the front of the house features a new window and a renovated roof. "The kids are happy because things are changing; it's gradually looking different," she says with evident satisfaction.
But Sandra is very clear about to whom all that effort belongs: "this is for my children, because I practically have nothing". Every day she goes to work in Dallas thinking of them. "People ask me why I go to work, my love, one must work, because if not, where does this come from," she responds naturally to those who question her way of life.
The sacrifice described has a specific name: "It is perseverance, because it is surviving here and surviving there, along with all the everyday problems that exist, which you all know." A phrase that summarizes the reality of thousands of Cubans in the diaspora who maintain two lives at the same time.
Sandra's motivation is as simple as it is powerful: "This is what I came to this country for, this is what gets me up every day, to see them happy, to see them comfortable, to ensure they have everything I couldn't have."
The story of Sandra is framed within a trend that has gained momentum on TikTok since 2025: Cubans emigrated to the United States investing their savings to buy or renovate properties in Cuba to improve the living conditions of relatives they left behind. The context makes it even more significant: Cuba faces a housing deficit of over 900,000 homes, with a severe crisis in building materials and only about 0.3% of what is needed constructed by the regime in 2025. Renovating a house on the island can cost over 60,000 dollars.
At the end of the video, Sandra delivers a direct message to both her supporters and her critics: "To the naysayers, this is my life, this is what I wake up to. I hope you all achieve your dreams and can accomplish things like this, which may seem small, but for me are incredibly significant."
