A video showing a fight involving people of Cuban origin in Supermanzana 23 in Cancun sparked an outpouring of neighborhood outrage that led to a protest in front of the Benito Juárez City Hall this Wednesday, where residents demanded increased security and the intervention of the National Institute of Migration (INM) to verify the legal status of foreigners living in the area.

Residents report at least ten incidents of assaults and thefts per month, a problem that extends beyond Supermanzana 23 and also affects Supermanzanas 22, 24, 26, and 27, all occurring, according to those affected, "in front of the authorities," as reported by the local media Expediente Quintana Roo.

The immediate trigger for the protest was an incident that occurred last weekend, when a foreigner reacted violently after being splashed with dirty water in the street, breaking the door of a home and sparking a group attack against the neighbors who tried to report the damage. Residents are calling for immigration intervention due to the lack of response from local authorities.

The Mexican Teresa Rodríguez recounted what happened to the media: "One person chased my brother while two others stayed behind hitting him with sticks." A relative of the victims warned about the seriousness of the attack: "They beat him with sticks. They could have killed him."

Impunity exacerbates the situation. Although Public Security arrived at the scene and the attacker admitted his guilt, he simply "shuts himself behind bars and nothing is done to him anymore." The aftermath is both physical and psychological: "I am afraid to walk down the street because if the guy gets out and attacks me, what am I going to do?"

The context is not isolated for Cubans, whose stigmatization is beginning to increase among the residents of the popular Mexican resort.

Recently, was arrested in Cancun, identified as the financial mastermind of a criminal network, as concerns grow over the arrival of Cubans deported from the United States to Mexico and their impact on local communities.
