Caridad Magdalena Castro Ruiz appeared on Friday at the Fajardo Hospital in Havana to demand medical attention for her son Kevin Damián Frómeta Castro, a political prisoner from the 11J detained in Prison 1580, where he suffers from a severe infection in one arm without receiving proper treatment for four months.
In a video shared on her Facebook account, the mother reported that the prison authorities did not transfer her son to the hospital that day, despite the fact that a doctor was also waiting for his arrival to conduct an ultrasound that had been pending since January 2026.
"My son Kevin has been without medical care since January. It's one deception after another. It's been four months. It's a struggle to get him the proper attention he needs. This is not a favor: it is his right to medical care," Caridad protested in her post.
Kevin Damián was sentenced to 16 years in March 2022 for his participation in the protests of July 11, and was briefly released in May 2022 before being returned to prison, where he currently remains without receiving the necessary medical care.
"My son is without medical attention. Without medical attention. With his arm, with a serious infection. He had to give himself a shot to get the humor out of there. He is in company. He isn’t even in the infirmary," his mother reported in the video.
The case of Kevin Damián adds to a long list of Cuban political prisoners facing critical health conditions without receiving adequate assistance.
Ana Ibis Tristá Padilla was in serious condition on April 14, while Jorge Bello Domínguez, a prisoner from the 11J protests, had gone two months without receiving proper medical treatment.
Other inmates have also resorted to extreme measures to bring attention to their situation. Yosvany Rosell García has been on a hunger strike for 35 days to demand medical care, while Alexander Díaz Rodríguez was diagnosed with thyroid cancer while incarcerated.
