A video posted on Instagram by journalist Sasi Alejandre has sparked significant controversy on social media after showing two Cuban women defending life on the island with a narrative that contrasts sharply with the reality facing the country.
During the interview, recorded during an activity of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDR), both women appear relaxed and claim to be happy amidst the energy crisis and rising poverty.
"We have a lot of problems, but we are the only ones who will solve them. No one is coming here to fix anything for us. We are full of problems, but we are a cheerful people," said one of the women.
In response to the question about how the revolution stays alive, both replied: “Well, look. Revolution is celebration and partying all the time. This is revolution!”
The identity of these Cuban women is still unknown. Their statements come amid long months without stable electricity service, without water in most homes, and without fuel for cooking.
The reactions from Cubans came swiftly, particularly due to the contrast between those words and the economic crisis, power outages, and shortages that millions of families on the island face daily.
Some comments were particularly harsh: “It's true that hunger drives people crazy,” wrote one user, while another summarized the scene as “the joke of the day… and if it’s going to happen, let it happen.”
Other internet users chose a more critical reading of the communists' speech. “They fantasize, they are out of touch with their reality, it's a form of escape,” commented one.
Meanwhile, someone recalled the saying that “ignorance is bold” and there were also those who urged to avoid that kind of messages: “What we want is to maintain peace, we do not want war with the United States.”
The interviewed communists insisted that they are not worried about the political situation or possible military attacks from the Trump Administration.
"I do not feel threatened by him at any moment. I don't even know who they are talking about because we are so busy... that at least I don't even know who he is," said one of the women in reference to U.S. President Donald Trump and a possible invasion of Cuba.
At another point in the video, the women also downplay any scenario of conflict and assert that it is the President himself who would be concerned about Cuba.
“Trump is the one who is worried, because he is afraid and we are not,” say the interviewees.
