The crew of the fishing boat F/V Timothy Michael caught an extraordinarily rare two-colored lobster off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in a discovery that has a odds of just one in 50 million.
The specimen was captured on April 16, and the public announcement was made by the Wellfleet Shellfish Company on Monday through its social media, where the news generated significant reactions among marine life enthusiasts and specialized media.
Instead of sending the lobster to the commercial market, the company decided to donate it to the oldest public marine aquarium in the United States, located in Woods Hole, Cape Cod, and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
"This incredible bicolor specimen was pulled from the water off Cape Cod by the F/V Timothy Michael, and instead of going to market, it is headed to an even more special place," they pointed out.
According to the information, "the Wellfleet Shellfish Company decided to donate this specimen to the Woods Hole Scientific Aquarium, where it will be exhibited to the public after the renovations of the facility are completed."
Currently, the specimen is under the care of experts from NOAA and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts, who emphasize that its astonishing "half and half" appearance is the result of an exceptional genetic variation that has captivated the scientific and fishing communities.
