Leticia María Merlo Alfonso and Ernesto Alejandro Barrera Ramírez, students from Sancti Spíritus at the Eusebio Olivera Rodríguez Pre-University Vocational Institute of Exact Sciences, won bronze medals at the 60th International Mendeleyev Chemistry Olympiad.
The competition took place from April 15 to 23 at Lomonosov Moscow State University and brought together more than 200 students from 35 countries.
This is one of the oldest and most challenging scientific olympiads in the world, founded in 1967 and recognized by UNESCO for the rigor of its theoretical and experimental tests.
The Cuban delegation was led by Master of Science Orestes Eduardo Landrove from the Luis Urquiza Jorge Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences in Las Tunas, and also included Doctor of Science Gerardo Manuel Ojeda as an invited mentor.
The preparation included months of online training, independent study, and lab practices to compete against participants from countries with a strong tradition in the discipline, such as Russia, China, and Brazil.
